Moving For Better Balance
Moving for Better Balance is an evidence-based, fall-prevention program that uses the principles and movement of Tai Chi to help older adults improve balance and increase confidence for everyday activities. The program is designed to help you improve your strength, balance, flexibility and mobility through the slow and therapeutic movements of Tai Chi.
According to the CDC, each year more than 1.5 million Americans will have a stroke or heart attack, which may result in impaired balance and mobility. Research has shown that Tai Chi-based programs like Moving For Better Balance may aid rehabilitation for those aged 45 or older with heart disease. Research has also shown that participants in Tai Chi classes had fewer falls, and fewer fall injuries, and their risk of falling was decreased by 55 percent. When combined with standard treatment, programs like Moving For Better Balance may help alleviate the symptoms associated with other chronic diseases and conditions.
"The Moving For Better Balance class was both helpful and fun—a mix of balance-focused preparation and exercise (sometimes a bit challenging!) and the intriguing discipline of Tai Chi. Our group really bonded. After about three sessions, we were sharing with each other our own tips for moving through the flowing, dance-like Tai Chi sequences." - Program Participant
